Post Malone is an unlikely candidate for a sous chef to Mario Carbone, arguably the biggest celebrity culinary star of our generation. For starters, he never cooks. (He does, however, enjoy a lot of frozen Red Baron pizzas: “Preheat the oven to 425,” he says.) The musician also isn’t into making cocktails unless it’s a Bud Light martini (which is a Bud Light put into a fancy glass) or a screwdriver. Here’s his recipe: “I just get some like Sunny D and ice cubes…”
But in a new video for Vogue’s series “Now Serving,” Malone is going to give it his best shot. Ok fine, maybe not his best. “I’ll let you do that part,” he tells Carbone when he asks for assistance in making mozzarella, the key component to the dish they are making: mozzarella in carrozza. (Or as Carbone explains, “fancy mozzarella sticks” comprised of breadcrumbs, mozzarella, tomato concentrate, basil pesto, and white bread.) “How are you doing here?” the chef asks Malone a little while later while he spreads tomato compote on bread. “Terrible,” he responds. (He does make a valiant attempt at whisking eggs.)
However, Malone certainly excels when it comes to one thing: vibes. He’s got several Bud Lights cracked open and ready to go: “This is the most important food group to me,” he says. He has a lot of enthusiasm for wearing an apron. He’s an eager taste tester—the mozzarella, he tells Carbone, could use a touch more salt. And, most importantly, he comes up with the pair’s signature catchphrase that they utter to the camera not once, not twice, but three times: “Let’s fry these motherfuckers.”
Below, watch Post Malone—who is gearing up for a one-night-only concert in Nashville on July 16 to premiere songs from his upcoming album, F-1 Trillion—and Mario Carbone’s buddy comedy-esque cooking video.
